17012398_10156364158482925_2101722666_nFollowing two previously successful years, and a Spirit Of The Fringe Award, Buxton Gay Pride will host their third annual Gay Pride Picnic, celebrating Buxton’s LGBTQ+ community and their friends. Event organiser, Gordon MacLellan, said “This year’s event has the theme of “Buxton’s Big Gay Bake Off”. Attendees are encouraged to bring a cake or dish to share. Entries will be judged by fabulous local drag queens Kate Butch and Marilyn Misandry. There are no prizes for cakes but there will be rosettes for winners and lots of laughter and cheering for everyone!”

Yes, we’re looking for cakes but we are expecting to award points as much on the wonder of their names as on their taste and appearance. We are hoping there might be some:

  • Gay Gateaux17012731_10156364158487925_2044638772_n
  • or Bi-forest Gateaux
  • or Trans Flans
  • or Lesbian Tarts
  • or Camp Croissants
  • or Polari Muffins
  • or just a flutter of Fairy Cakes
  • Seductive Scones?
  • Risque rock-cakes
  • Who knows…..

Who knows?

Just to be clear:

  1. This isn’t a very serious competition
  2. Entries can be brought along when you come to the Picnic but they must all be registered by 3pm
  3. The only prize is everyone else’s delight and acclaim. There might be a rosette or two and the chance to taste someone else’s cake
  4. The Judge’s Fabulous Decisions are Final
  5. Make sure your cake is edible – no cheating with glue and plaster please
  6. You are responsible for your own cake so please make sure you take any of it that is left away with you when you leave the Picnic

Inspiring, mouth-watering, delicious cake pics

Pride, Cakes and Picnics!

Buxton Gay Pride Picnic

Saturday 20th July 2019

 2pm – 5pm

Pavilion Gardens, Buxton, SK17 6BE

From gay gateaux to outrageous hats, this year’s Picnic

looks set  to be our tastiest and most colourful yet!

Everyone is welcome to join our 3rd annual celebration of the LGBTQ+ community of the Peaks. Bring a picnic for an afternoon of light-hearted silliness and determined delight. Fabulous summer hats are invited and why not bring a cake to join our Buxton Big Gay Bake Off?

Our theme this year is A Fabulous Garden Fete and to support this we are encouraging people to come along wearing their most fantastic hat. There might be flowers, or flamingos, or frogs (as long as no animals were harmed in the creation of the hat….) and if you don’t have such a piece of exquisite millinery, don’t worry! We’ll have a cheerful afternoon of hat making in June and there will be resources on hand on the day for people to improvise something, well, fabulous!

More than this, our Picnic is also a statement of presence and pride and courage and we hope you will join us and be bold. Be who you are and not who other people say you should be: all we ask is that you join us to rejoice in our diversity and to celebrate all of us and each other with strength and joy.

That won’t be the end of our Garden Party, however. There will be games: hula hoops to hoople with, face paints for a bit of emergency slap, spontaneous sing-alongs*. And there will be cakes or we hope there will. Like any Garden Fete we are hoping for an intense but simply Proud bit of cake baking and we invite people join the

The Buxton Big Gay Bake Off!

Bring a finished (and homemade, please!) cake along to the Picnic on the day. Prizes will be awarded as much on the description as on the appearance and taste of your culinary mistresspiece (masterpiece? Personpiece?). So we might meet

could we ever match the wonders of Little Chelly Cakes?

  • Gay gateaux
  • Dykiest desserts
  • Sapphic Sponges
  • Faggy Flans
  • Trans Flans
  • Biforest Gateaux
  • Butch brownies
  • Camp carrot cakes
  • Lesbian Dacquoise…..

Judging: entries will be judged by our very own Dame Marilyn Misandry

Prize giving: will be awarded by our mystery Guest of Honour. if we haven’t got one, we’ll draft a passing stranger

Prize: will be a slice a someone else’s cake! And a wonderful, magnificent, dare-we-say fabulous, Rosette that you can wear to boast of your prowess!

This year we acknowledge our friend Chris Hughes who died in 2018 and who was an enthusiastic supporter of these Pride Picnics and a noted Provider of Cakes. Thank you, Chris. We miss you

How can you resist? Drift elegantly along on Saturday 20th and grace the Pavilion Gardens with your wonderful presence

Spring delights and summer events

as the frogspawn starts to bubble our ponds and the last snowdrops and first ramsons meet in the woods, Stone and Water are gearing up for a lively summer

There are various grant applications brewing which will hopefully underpin several series of exciting events over the summer months. More details will appear as plans confirm but just to whet some appetites and get your diaries slightly scribbled on, here are a few things that are definitely happening

Sunday 15th July
Where: Pavilion Gardens (by the young children’s play ground), St John’s Rd, Buxton SK17 6BE
When: 11:00 – 15:00
Cost: nothing but smiles
The Tiny! team are back for another day of making and laughter. Join us in creating a whole submarine world in our sea tent. Mermaids and monsters, sharks, dolphins and sea-horses: who knows what will be wriggling in our seaweed?
Lamellib-2We have lost count of how many Tiny! events we have done as part of the Fringe over the years, sitting in Pavilion Gardens in sunshine, rain and sogginess. With the unifying theme of “make nothing bigger than your hand” they are always great fun. We hope that on a lively day in the Gardens, our Tiny! corner becomes a place to stop; for everyone and anyone to make, for people to sit down on the grass and chat and laugh and make new friends….

And this year there will be deep underwater wonders – we are bringing the crochetted Carboniferous seabed from our Ancient Landscapes project so that your creations will have somewhere to explore before they swim you all off home
