Are you ready to picnic?

Buxton Pride Picnic 2020

Saturday 18th July

14:00 – 17:00

Pavilion Gardens, Buxton

Find us on the lawns in front of the Swimming Pool

( Festival Fringe venue 33n)

Low Hats 1Are you ready?

Have you started trimming your best hats, practising your flouncing?

Time now, perhaps, for a quick bit of cake rehearsal: how camp can you make that dish? How frivolous? How full of the trauma, despair and passion of Pride? Or maybe just bake a wonderful Gay Forest Gateaux

A summer afternoon, fancy hats, wonderful cakes, fabulous people: Buxton’s Pride Picnic is back for its 4th feast, a celebration of the town’s LGBTQ+ community. Join us for laughter, conversation, new friends, old tarts. Bring your own picnic, maybe bake a cake for our Big Gay Bake Off.

More details will follow

And no, we don’t know if we’ll be able to do this wonderful event. We don’t know if Buxton Festival Fringe will happen this year. The International Festival has cancelled but with more local acts and locally organised events, we are hoping the Fringe will go ahead. If it is safe to gather, with or without Festivals (we’ll probably have our own Fringes), we will Picnic. We may have to picnic at Appropriate Distances and possibly organise some rainbow coloured semaphore flags to send messages of solidarity and cake to picnic enclaves scattered across the garden. We may even end up facetiming picnics from back gardens and front rooms across the High Peak, but we will Picnic as only Pride people can.

Stay safe. Be well

17012398_10156364158482925_2101722666_nFollowing two previously successful years, and a Spirit Of The Fringe Award, Buxton Gay Pride will host their third annual Gay Pride Picnic, celebrating Buxton’s LGBTQ+ community and their friends. Event organiser, Gordon MacLellan, said “This year’s event has the theme of “Buxton’s Big Gay Bake Off”. Attendees are encouraged to bring a cake or dish to share. Entries will be judged by fabulous local drag queens Kate Butch and Marilyn Misandry. There are no prizes for cakes but there will be rosettes for winners and lots of laughter and cheering for everyone!”

Yes, we’re looking for cakes but we are expecting to award points as much on the wonder of their names as on their taste and appearance. We are hoping there might be some:

  • Gay Gateaux17012731_10156364158487925_2044638772_n
  • or Bi-forest Gateaux
  • or Trans Flans
  • or Lesbian Tarts
  • or Camp Croissants
  • or Polari Muffins
  • or just a flutter of Fairy Cakes
  • Seductive Scones?
  • Risque rock-cakes
  • Who knows…..

Who knows?

Just to be clear:

  1. This isn’t a very serious competition
  2. Entries can be brought along when you come to the Picnic but they must all be registered by 3pm
  3. The only prize is everyone else’s delight and acclaim. There might be a rosette or two and the chance to taste someone else’s cake
  4. The Judge’s Fabulous Decisions are Final
  5. Make sure your cake is edible – no cheating with glue and plaster please
  6. You are responsible for your own cake so please make sure you take any of it that is left away with you when you leave the Picnic

Inspiring, mouth-watering, delicious cake pics
